Abstract: The role of universities and university researchers in fostering communities and regional developmnet has been discussed at the academic and policy level for the past 30 years. The involvement of universities with their region has been seen as a positive factor for economic development and widening participation in the region. At the same time, the need for a dialogue with the public and public participation in science have been seen as crucial for the public understanding, legitimisation and advancement of science. Accordingly, third mission, civil outreach or public engagement roles are increasingly being institutionalised. However, a successful model of public engagement is crucial for positive results, for both academics and communities. This document presents a case study of engagement activities at the University of Nottingham. It contends that successful engagement depends on the university's culture, organisation and policies as well as on the public's response to scientific research.

Abstract: This reports seeks to identify existing academic and professional literature on the use of segmentation methods in public engagement activities, but it also analyses emerging trends in academic and non-academic discussions on segmentation and public engagement, with the help of three organisational imperatives: accountability, efficiency, legitimacy. The document also aims at generating better understandings of informal learning processes, as much as showing methods that are instrumental to finding out about publics and making publics. Basically, this research synthesis provides an overview of the principles and imperatives behind the increasing use of market segmentation tools for public engagement purposes.

Abstract: This guide is designed to help the researcher build a strategy and plan for public engagement in the research that is appropriate and meaningful. The focus is on PE - by exploring what is meant by the term public engagement and why it is important in the research process - for research that securely uses administrative data, although the principles may be applicable to other research areas and PE is considered just as important for research using administrative data as it is for research where based on questionnaires, focus groups or observation. The guide is split into two key parts: the first one explores some main questions, in order to create a public engagement strategy, the second one shows the practical issues needed in order to plan the type of public engagement activity to undertake.
