Responsible Research and innovation: Europe’s ability to respond to societal challenges European Commission - Directorate-General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission
Ente: European Commission - Directorate-General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission
Contesto geografico: EU
Tema: Vision: strategie e orientamenti
Titolo: Responsible Research and innovation: Europe’s ability to respond to societal challenges
Tipologia documento: Documento strategico
Lingua: Inglese
Anno pubblicazione: 2014
Abstract: This document arises from «Science in Society (SiS)» action plan launched in 2007 to set out a common strategy to make a better connection between science and European citizens, then to foster public engagement and a sustained two-way dialogue between science and civil society. Since 2010, the focus of SiS has been to develop a framework for Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI). This framework consists of 6 key actions: to develop solutions to societal problems and opportunities, to integrate gender dimensions in research and innovation content, to enhance the education process and better equip future researchers and other societal actors, to ensure high quality results, to be more transparent and accessible, to prevent harmful or unethical developments in research and innovation.

Abstract: The term responsible (research and) innovation has gained increasing EU policy relevance in the last two years, in particular within the European Commission’s Science in Society programme, in the context of the Horizon 2020 Strategy. The paper provides a brief historical overview of the concept, and identify three distinct features that are emerging from associated discourses. The first is an emphasis on the democratic governance of the purposes of research and innovation and their orientation towards the ‘right impacts’. The second is responsiveness, emphasising the integration and institutionalisation of established approaches of anticipation, reflection and deliberation in and around research and innovation, influencing the direction of these and associated policy. The third concerns the framing of responsibility itself in the context of research and innovation as collective activities with uncertain and unpredictable consequences. Finally, the authors reflect on possible motivations for responsible innovation itself

Abstract: This survey has been conceived after the Lisbon Strategy being revised in 2010, in order to investigate European citizens’ general attitudes towards science and technology, to see if this perception has changed significantly from 2005 and if it mirrors the effects of the Lisbon Strategy. More specifically, this report focuses on some points: European citizens’ interest and level of information, image and knowledge of science and technology, attitudes towards science and technology, responsibilities of scientists and policymakers, scientific studies and the role of women and young people, effectiveness of European scientific research. A variety of socio-demographic variables - such as respondents’ gender, age, education and occupation - have been used to provide additional analysis.

Abstract: This report starts by drawing some significant lessons from previous ‘science and technology studies’ (STS) scholarship. It also summarises the most important shifts in EU policy discourse related to science-society issues. From several decades of STS research we have (1) come to understand science and society as being in continuous co-evolution – a co-evolution which, however, demands constant attention in terms of governance and care. Abstract: This reports seeks to identify existing academic and professional literature on the use of segmentation methods in public engagement activities, but it also analyses emerging trends in academic and non-academic discussions on segmentation and public engagement, with the help of three organisational imperatives: accountability, efficiency, legitimacy. The document also aims at generating better understandings of informal learning processes, as much as showing methods that are instrumental to finding out about publics and making publics. Basically, this research synthesis provides an overview of the principles and imperatives behind the increasing use of market segmentation tools for public engagement purposes.

Abstract: This three-year strategy is intended to show SFU in its evolution to become “Canada’s most community-engaged research university” and to maximize its contribution to the local, provincial, national and global economy and society. The same vision as an “engaged university” is considered the precondition for the first institutional community engagement strategy whose goals and objectives are meant as specific as an integral part of the academic mission, creating opportunities for practical and experiential learning, informing and inspiring research, but also contributing to its relevance and success. This strategy is finally intended to facilitate community access to knowledge and resources, by connecting, embedding and communicating SFU’s engagement efforts.

Abstract: The centrality of engagement is critical to the success of higher education in the future. Engagement is essential to most effectively achieving the overall purpose of the university, which is focused on the knowledge enterprise. Today’s engagement is scholarly, is an aspect of learning and discovery, and enhances society and higher education. Undergirding today’s approach to community engagement is the understanding that not all knowledge and expertise resides in the academy, and that both expertise and great learning opportunities in teaching and scholarship also reside in non-academic settings.
