Abstract: Why do scientists volunteer to be involved in public engagement in science? What are the barriers that can prevent them participationg in dialogue with society? What can be done to facilitate their participation? In this paper we present a case study of the Children's University programme of the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) (Trieste, Italy), discussing the three-year experience, and reporting the outcomes of a series of focus groups conducted with the young scientists who volunteered in the programme. Two kinds of motivations emerged. The first is personal, for example volunteers' desire to improve their own communication abilities, or their curiosity for a new activity. The second is related to the perceived role of scientists in society: many volunteers feel a sense of duty and the need to promote science and its importance in society, to have an impact to the public perception of science and to seed the love for science in young people. After the first year of their involvement, volunters epressed the need to keep improving their communication skill and participating in professional training courses, and agreed that science communication should become part of all standard training programmes of PhDs. In order for the outreach not to remain a sporadic experience, it is essential that a strong institutional commitment exists to promote, recruit, encourage, professionally train and support those involved.

Abstract: This three-year strategy is intended to show SFU in its evolution to become “Canada’s most community-engaged research university” and to maximize its contribution to the local, provincial, national and global economy and society. The same vision as an “engaged university” is considered the precondition for the first institutional community engagement strategy whose goals and objectives are meant as specific as an integral part of the academic mission, creating opportunities for practical and experiential learning, informing and inspiring research, but also contributing to its relevance and success. This strategy is finally intended to facilitate community access to knowledge and resources, by connecting, embedding and communicating SFU’s engagement efforts.

Abstract: This paper aims at representing the mission of a university conscious of its role and roots in the community needs. In the first part, it shows four areas where to seek engagement: with stakeholders, with the working world, with a range of partners in research activities, with communities and regions. In the second part, the document provides a list of questions that institutional leaders might ask in order to gauge the institution’s level and location of engagement. More in general, it reflects upon how Commonwealth universities expect to engage with government, industry, commerce, health and education leaders, administrators, planners and student representatives about policy, science and technology to become engines of development for people, institutions and for democracy in general. Among the main goals claimed, the document sheds light on the concept of engagement - national, global, active - as a core value to share knowledge, but also to help societies tackle the problems and act as a central part in the community service.

Abstract: Much has been written about the impact of involvement on research and the people involved, but much less is known about the impact on researchers. Based on previous experience of evaluating involvement, the author argues that researchers often report learning something new from involvement. Patients/the public bring ‘new’ knowledge to researchers, informed by their lived experience and use of services. The author therefore carried out a narrative review of the literature to explore in depth what researchers learn from involvement. The findings confirmed that researchers often gain new knowledge and skills through involvement, which can change their priorities, values and attitudes. Therefore, researchers often directly experience the impact of involvement themselves. This learning then changes their practice. It leads them to change the design, delivery and dissemination of their research. Thus, many of the reported outcomes of involvement might be underpinned by what the researchers learnt through the process. Reframing impacts on research as impacts on researchers’ learning has implications for practice and for motivating researchers to work with patients and the public. Further research and future evaluations of involvement might usefully explore the links between researchers’ learning and outcomes.

Abstract: This document arises from «Science in Society (SiS)» action plan launched in 2007 to set out a common strategy to make a better connection between science and European citizens, then to foster public engagement and a sustained two-way dialogue between science and civil society. Since 2010 the focus of SiS has been to develop a framework for Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI). The framework consists of 6 keys: engagement, to develop solutions to societal problems and opportunities, gender equality, to integrate gender dimensions in research and innovation content, science education, to enhance the education process to better equip future researchers and other societal actors, ethics, to ensure high quality results, open access, to be more transparent and accessible, governance, to prevent harmful or unethical developments in research and innovation.
